Six Sustainable Looks
by Julia Sanderson

It’s one thing to talk the talk; Julia Sanderson, our ad team stylist, shows us how to walk the walk.

The Educator

BATEAU NECK ¾-SLEEVE CROPPED TOP, SUPERSOFT YAK & MERINO, WHEAT
SOFT-V TANK, STRETCH SILK CHARMEUSE, SEA SALT
35" FULL-LENGTH STRAIGHT SKIRT, WASHABLE WOOL CREPE, CAPER

This look was inspired by my sister Katy, who recently completed her master’s in environmental education and begins teaching at a boarding school in Vermont this fall. A hippie at heart (she has her own small farm and sells undyed and vegetable-dyed fibers from her livestock), Katy likes to be comfortable in her clothing. And she’s definitely not bringing anything to a dry cleaner—it’s all going to be rinsed in a sink or thrown in the washing machine.

She doesn’t have to get decked out, but she does need to look put together. I’ve given her a sweater made with yak, a yarn that supports nomadic herders on the Tibetan Plateau. The tank underneath is made from bluesign® certified silk charmeuse. And the skirt stands up to years of washing and never needs ironing—a real plus, since how we care for clothes has a bigger environmental impact than how they’re made.

The Executive

STAND COLLAR SHORT JACKET WITH LEATHER TRIM, TROPICAL SUITING WITH ECO POLY, BLACK
SCOOP NECK LONG SLIM CAMI, STRETCH SILK JERSEY, BLACK
22" KNEE-LENGTH PENCIL SKIRT, WASHABLE STRETCH CREPE, BLACK

It’s easy to make assumptions about environmentally friendly clothes: They’re fine if you spend your time sitting on the floor of a kindergarten class or across from a client in a therapist’s office. Before I came to EILEEN FISHER, I worked in finance, experience I drew from when putting together a crisp, professional look that’s eco-friendly from head to toe.

For this look, I pictured an executive wearing a suit and heels to the office—I like to think she’s a lawyer for the Environmental Defense Fund. Her fitted jacket uses 39 percent recycled polyester fiber from recycled plastic bottles, which sounds funny, but the fabric feels very refined. The silk tank is bluesign® certified, and the skirt is basically indestructible and goes right in the washing machine. You can roll it up in your suitcase for a business trip. I love that it is made right here in New York.

The Woman About Town

CLASSIC COLLAR KNEE-LENGTH DRESS WITH SLIP, SHEER SILK GEORGETTE, BLACK

My first job at EILEEN FISHER was working as a sales associate on Columbus Avenue and I got asked a lot about what to wear to parties on the weekends or fancy dinners out. My answer this season is this terrific dress in Sheer Silk Georgette—it can be worn casually with leggings or solo with heels. I love how simple and elegant it is. I’d also suggest having a bit of fun and throwing it on over jeans or adding a little jacket. Like all of our core silks, this one is bluesign® certified.

The Downtown Girl

V-NECK SHORT-SLEEVE TUNIC, CRYSTALLINE SILK SHIBORI, CHARCOAL/BLACK
SKINNY JEAN, ORGANIC COTTON WAXED STRETCH DENIM, BLACK

I guess nowadays she’s actually the Brooklyn girl. For this look, I was imagining someone who expresses herself through her clothes and enjoys experimenting with her look. I put her in our Crystalline Silk Shibori top. It’s not only gorgeous, it also happens to be bluesign® certified and artisanally dyed, which makes each piece unique. It looks great over our waxed organic cotton jeans. There’s something classically EILEEN FISHER about this top, yet it feels totally fresh. It’s what our staff is wearing now.

The Yoga Pro

SCOOP NECK YOGA TANK, ORGANIC COTTON STRETCH JERSEY, BLACK
ANKLE LEGGINGS, VISCOSE JERSEY, BLACK
FAIR TRADE HOODED BOY CARDIGAN, ORGANIC COTTON KNIT, CHARCOAL

Her style is easy! She teaches yoga (or Pilates or the Alexander Technique) at a tony spa and has to look good while doing it. She also likes to ride her bike to work. She makes a uniform out of what most of us consider workout clothes—lots of organic cotton yoga tanks, paired with her tried-and-true Viscose Jersey leggings (made in the USA). Both hold up well after multiple washings. For super-soft layering, she can top it off with an organic fair trade cotton hoodie.

The Newbie

SKINNY JEAN, ORGANIC SOFT STRETCH DENIM, BLACK INDIGO
BATEAU NECK LONG SLIM TOP, ORGANIC COTTON & WOOL BIAS TWIST, CHARCOAL

This is the character that inspired our team to do this feature. They threw out a question: If I could recommend just one piece to someone who wanted to start investing in a sustainable wardrobe, what would it be?

To me, the answer is obvious, and it’s something I wear just about every day: jeans. Almost everyone has a pair, no matter their age or personal style. I’m a fan of our skinny jeans in Organic Soft Stretch Denim. Our denim comes in basic rinses, which means you can wear it for years without feeling outdated. For the Newbie, I chose our Black Indigo jeans and a top made with 53 percent organic cotton. Jeans are already a well-loved part of most people’s wardrobes—going organic just makes them that much better.
